From the Triangle Fire to Today

Ferrara Manufacturing, 37-38 31st St, Long Island City, NY 11101

During the month of March we celebrated Women’s History Month and commemorated the anniversary of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire where over 100 women perished, many of them Italian immigrant seamstresses. This event will recognize the history of the garment industry, and the subsequent labor movement that evolved following the tragic fire. Join us in this conversation on the role of women in the workforce, and the central role that the garment industry has played in improving working conditions for all. Thanks to the Garment District, generations of women have achieved economic independence and self empowerment. The conversation will be led by led by Professor Donna Chirico with participants including NOIAW 2025 Wise Woman Gabrielle Ferrara, COO of Ferrara Manufacturing, Mary Ann Trasciatti, Professor of Rhetoric and Public Advocacy and Director of Labor Studies at Hofstra University, who is also president of Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition. The Italian Daughter's Cookbook

Come discover - or rediscover - with us the joy of authentic Calabrese cooking, which brings back loving childhood memories. Cathy grew up with the recipes of her mother, Maria, who was from Calabria, specifically from Marina di Gioiosa in the Province of Reggio Calabria. As a child, she watched her mother make these delicious dishes but, like women of the time, they never wrote anything down. So, Cathy took it upon herself to reproduce these recipes and went about duplicating the tastes of the food she grew up with. This cookbook is a loving tribute to her dear mother and a dedication to her husband and children for their support throughout the process. The Italian Daughter's Cookbook is a love letter to her Calabrian Heritage. If you are Calabrese, the cookbook will bring you back to your childhood with the many delicious recipes. In one of these recipes ---- Tomato sauce with Soppressata ---- Cathy demonstrates how to make a pasta dish for dinner after a long day at work ----- a comfort food that won't take hours to prepare. Cathy Coluccio Fazzolari is co-owner of the legendary D. Coluccio and Sons in Brooklyn, New York. Founded by her father in the mid 1960's, it is one of the oldest importers of Italian Specialty foods in the United States. Cathy grew up in the business. Fluent in Italian with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from St. John's University in Queens, she runs the day-to-day operations of the company, travels to Italy and attends trade shows to source artisanal food products. The Italian Daughter's Cookbook is available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Registration fee: $10. The link to the virtual program will be shared, upon registration, a few days prior to the event.

Testimonials

“As an Italian lifestyle blogger and marketing professional, NOIAW has allowed me to connect and build relationships with professional women of Italian descent, all while celebrating our beloved heritage. I moved from Italy when I was nine years old, and this organization has helped me feel connected to my culture through their various events and resources. Learning about the paths and successes of many women who are NOIAW members is truly inspiring, and it makes me proud to be part of this group”.
