The Italian Garden Project: Nostalgia for Yesterday…Lessons for Today
Join the DC Region to experience the beauty and charm of the traditional Italian American backyard vegetable garden! Mary Menniti, founder of The Italian Garden Project, will share her work in documenting these gardens. Her presentation will feature unique and nostalgic photography of the gardeners and their gardens.
Mary Menniti’s Italian immigrant grandfather taught her the importance of a self-reliant lifestyle. She founded The Italian Garden Project to preserve old-world food and gardening traditions and show that the joy and wisdom of the traditional Italian American garden can help sustain future generations. The project collects oral histories of the gardeners and their craft throughout the United States and creates photographic archives of their gardens. Mary’s efforts led to the first Italian American vegetable garden becoming a part of the Archives of the American Garden at the Smithsonian Institution.
