New Italian Cinema Events (N.I.C.E.), a nonprofit organization based in Florence, Italy, is back again to celebrate Italian film here in New York! All film screenings are free and open to the public. On Friday, November 18, 2016 catch the award winning documentary If Only I Were That Warrior, by Valerio Ciriaci. This feature documentary film focuses on the Italian occupation of Ethiopia in 1935. Following the construction of a monument dedicated to Fascist general Rodolfo Graziani, the film addresses the unpunished war crimes he and others committed in the name of Mussolini’s imperial ambitions. On Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 5:30 pm, enjoy the U.S. premier of the film L’universale at the SVA Theatre (Beatrice). This coming-of-age tale is set in Florence, Italy and follows the path of three friends. This is the true story of a film theatre, The Universale, which was a cultural landmark in the city between the ’60s and the ’80s. It was a theater of its own kind, bringing together intellectuals, students, as well as the people from San Frediano, a well-known working-class Quartiere. Register now! On Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 8:45 pm, take part in the premier of the romantic drama Second Spring. Set over a period of six seasons, from Winter to a second Spring, Calogero’s long-awaited film unravels the stories of several characters, each representing a different stage in life. After getting pregnant and being disowned by her brother, student Hikma is hosted by Andrea, a fifty-year-old architect who sees in the girl his deceased wife Sofia, who passed away under mysterious circumstances.
